Meet the people at Sherpa Kids HQ who provide a wealth of knowledge and legendary ongoing support for you and your teams.
Sherpa Kids is an international company specialising in childcare and holidays activities for kids from age 2 to 18. Sherpa Kids has over 120 franchises worldwide, 265+ locations and looks after around 9,000+ school-aged children every day.
The founding company, Safe Kids in Daily Supervision (sKids), was launched in New Zealand in 1996. Dawn Engelbrecht and Bev Parsons purchased existing sKids franchises in 2000 and 1998 respectively, before going onto purchase the New Zealand franchisor business, which had 19 locations at the time.
Under their leadership, sKids now operate in more than 165+ New Zealand locations and is supported by more than 60 franchisees. The company continues to operate under this original name in New Zealand, but as part of the Sherpa Kids International network.
Sherpa Kids’ activities include arts and crafts, music and drama, sport and games, cooking and technology. Many of them are based on specific themes, such as the Circus, Recycling, Sporting Events and Space, and they are tailored to fit in with the individual requirements of schools and their curriculums. More than 80 themes have been prepared, equating to more than two and half years of fun and educationally engaging activities.
The concept of better, more structured childcare was introduced to Australia in 2011 and has since expanded into South Africa, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England and Canada, with other countries being developed due to the growing global demand.
THE SHERPA HEAD OFFICE SUPPORT TEAM
MEET DAWN ENGELBRECHT, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF SHERPA KIDS INTERNATIONAL.
The foundation of the Sherpa Kids ‘family first’ culture was formed from my sense of fun, empathy and innate ability to take the rough with the smooth.
In 2000, after learning that my kids made up 50% of the local after school care program, I jokingly said “I should just buy that business”. 3 weeks later, I bought the franchise!
It is my belief that all families should have access to quality childcare around the world. With today’s society getting busier and busier, and the pressures on families in local communities, the need for care that is local and engaging has never been stronger. This belief has been the driving force behind the sKids and Sherpa Kids businesses growing from 10 sites in New Zealand to over 260 worldwide in just 20 years.
I look forward to discussing with you how you can make a difference in your local community.

THE INITIAL PHASE OF MY BUSINESS HAS BEEN FAST AND EFFECTIVE…
“From my initial contact with the Sherpa Kids team, I have found an outstandingly proficient and extremely professional organisation.
It was from these first impressions that convinced me that I had to be a part of the Sherpa Kids operation. Since making this decision I have not had an opportunity to look back as the initial phase of my business has been fast and effective.
They have done everything to set me up to succeed and are extremely supportive on guiding me to achieve success. I can now look forward to the next phase of my business.”
Mick Rasmussen @ Sherpa Kids – Australia
THE SUPPORT FROM SHERPA KIDS WAS UNFAILING…
“After 18 years with South Africa’s largest listed education group I was looking to do something on my own – as my independence and creativity was feeling stifled.
I was looking for a business opportunity which allowed me to utilise my experience in education, training and development. I am personally very interested in business ideas where the market demand clearly exists but the solutions do not. Sherpa Kids ticked all of these boxes for me.
Before I entered the Sherpa Kids network I spent time understanding the market in South Africa, visited a few of the international Sherpa Kids centres. I found the support from Dawn in this process was unfailing. She is always available to chat and through conferences and group chats has kept the inter country dynamic strong.
Three and a half years later – Sherpa Kids South Africa has a network of 18 franchisees operating in 3 provinces as well as one within our neighbouring country, Namibia. We operate in over 40 different primary schools and service on average 1000 families daily.
I am very proud of the work our team has done to launch within the South African market, as a new player in the franchise industry and within the school service provider sector. South African’s are loyal to home-grown brands and only 15% of franchise brands emanate from outside South Africa. OSHC is an underdeveloped sector and parent/user education has been a critical success factor.

SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY…
“After several months of research and due diligence into the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) market in Ireland I believed there to be a real gap in the market for an organised and structured service that could be repeated across the country.
Having no relevant experience in childcare, except with my own daughter, my next hurdle to overcome was how I could seize this opportunity quickly and hold onto the “first mover” advantage I had identified. I had 2 choices – either I could spend years trying to build up a brand that would be recognised for excellence, integrity and affordability in care or I could see if there was anything out there that met these criteria.
I was unsure of what to expect going forward from there but the tools I was provided with, the continual business and personal development that was insisted on and the unique transferability of this brand has given me a business which positively challenges me every minute of every day.
That said, it is not just a business as it gives so much more than that. I feel that Sherpa Kids Ireland is providing a service to the local community, helping single parents get back to work, helping schools and teachers manage their finances and time more efficiently and most importantly of all, it is giving the kids something that they love.
And all of this is done in a business environment that has been created with a satisfactory warmth that makes me feel an identity with a family I didn’t have a year ago.”
